Ida's chickens

Ida has been arriving at school anxious to tell us how many chickens  have hatched at her house.
She is very excited with the 20 new additions to the family and is helping her Mum and Dad look after them.

Room 5 went to visit the chickens yesterday.

Here is Ida showing us the incubator.

Ida said the eggs are kept inside the incubator to keep them warm and moist.
Her dad turns the eggs each day and checks they are healthy by shining a torch on the egg to make sure he can see veins.

Once the chickens hatch, they are put into a big box with a heat lamp to keep them warm and some food. The chickens huddle together to keep warm and move away from each other to cool down.

Thank you Mrs Petrie for letting us visit the chickens.
