Flowering vegetable plants.

Room 5 scientists made a prediction about which plants in the school garden flowered.

This is what they thought before
they went to the garden.......

and this is what they discovered after
exploring the garden and
searching the internet.

This is what the flowers look
like on the vegetable plants.

Can you name other vegetable plants that flower? Post your thinking.

I Can Write

This week the children have been reading a big book called I Can Write. They discovered you can write words in a variety of ways.

Today the children used  ice to
write words on the concrete.

How exciting was that Room 5?

Classification of plants.

As scientists today ,Room 5 went to the school garden and collected a selection of leaves.
Back in the classroom the children classified their leaves and explained why they put the leaves into various groups.

Here are their explanations.
  • leaves that look like a circle
  • leaves that are long and skinny
  •  little leaves that come off a stem
  • leaves that look like a triangle
  • oval shaped leaves
  • three leaves that are at the top of a stem

Can you match their explanation
to the leaves in the photo?

Jesse's writing

Image result for cat stuck in a pipe

My Nana's little cat got stuck in the pipe.Ritchie pulled him out. Nana was sad.

This was a great piece of writing from Jesse because he looked around the room for words and spelt some words all by himself. He also wrote some letter sounds in the correct order. Tumeke Jesse!

Dan the Flying Man

Today Room 5 used their skills in reading and maths to complete an activity for our shared book, 'Dan the Flying Man'.

Spot on reading, forming of groups and counting Ashlee, Shyla and Xavier.

Jesse and Willa reading together.

Yesterday the children were learning to use the video on the i pad. The children thought it would be a good idea to take videos of themselves reading a book after they had  read with Mrs Drake.

This is the video that Ida took of the children in her reading group reading 'Holiday Time'.

Great videoing skills Ida.

Wow Lewie!

This morning before school Mrs Drake heard Lewie spelling the word look,so she got him to write it on the activeboard.
He was able to turn look into new words. Look how pleased he was with himself.

Lewie got so excited with his success that he wanted to write a story using the word looking.Look what he did without any help.

I am looking at Mum.
There was no stopping Lewie. He just wanted to keep writing and this was all before school.

I am looking at Dad.

Lewie, you made Mrs Drake and Mum so happy. What an excellent start to the day.Thank you.

Bessie the musician

Bessie with her Mum Mandy
and little brother Caspian.

Today Bessie played her violin to the children in Room 5. She was very good.

Listen to her play.

Wow Bessie and to think you are only
just 5 years old!

After listening to Bessie, the children were allowed to have a go on the violin with some help from Bessie's Mum.

Thank you Bessie for playing and sharing your violin with us and Mandy for helping too.

What happened to the roses?

This is what our white roses looked
like in the morning.

The stems of the plants sucked up the dyed water. It travelled to the petals and leaves.
The water from the petals dried up (evaporated) but  the dye didn't, so the flowers changed colour. The water that evaporated put oxygen into the air. Without the oxygen we would not be able to breathe.
Now that is interesting!

Brain Gym

Room 5 love being active in the class to help keep them focussed on their learning.

Be a scientist.

Today Room 5 put some white roses into jars of food colouring.

Look carefully at the stems of the roses and the jars of dye. Make a prediction of what might happen.

This is what was observed during the afternoon.

What will the roses look like tomorrow morning when you come to school? Make a prediction and post your thoughts.

Cellphones in the classroom

Today Bessie wrote a story about last week's flood. This is what she wrote.

The flood covered the playground on Friday.

Mrs Drake wanted to celebrate Bessie's wonderful use of letter sounds for tricky words with her family, so she sent a photo and a text to her Mum.

Look what Bessie's mum said.......
